Physically-Constrained Diffeomorphic Demons for the Estimation of 3D Myocardium Strain from Cine-MRI

چکیده
Analysing heart motion provides crucial insights on the condition of the cardiac function. Tagged-MRI and 2D-strain ultrasound enable quantitative assessment of the myocardium strain. But estimating 3D myocardium strain from cine-MRI remains attractive: cine-MRI is widely available and it yields detailed 3D+t anatomical images. This paper presents an image-based method to estimate myocardium strain from clinical short-axis cine-MRI. To recover non-apparent cardiac motions, we improve the diffeomorphic demons, a non-linear registration algorithm, by adding two physical constraints. First, myocardium nearincompressibility is ensured by constraining the deformations to be divergence free. Second, myocardium elasticity is modelled using smooth vector filters. The proposed physically-constrained demons are compared with the diffeomorphic demons and evaluated in a healthy subject against tagged MRI. The method is also tested on a patient with congenital pulmonary valve regurgitations and compared with 2D-strain measurements. In both cases, obtained results correlate well with ground truth. This method may become a useful tool for cardiac function evaluation.

Automated cardiac motion estimation from 3D Cine DENSE MRI
Background 3D cine displacement encoding with stimulated echoes (DENSE) directly encodes tissue displacement into MR phase data, providing a comprehensive 3D view of cardiac motion and strain. Unfortunately, 3D cine DENSE motion analysis presently requires manually delineated anatomy. An automated analysis would reduce interobserver variability, improve measurement throughput, and simplify data...

Understanding the deformation of the tongue during human speech is important for head and neck surgeons and speech and language scientists. Tagged magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can be used to image 2D motion, and data from multiple image planes can be combined via post-processing to yield estimates of 3D motion. However, lacking boundary information, this approach suffers from inaccurate esti...

متن کاملEvaluation of myocardial strain in patients with myocardial amyloidosis using feature-tracking technique
Background Cardiac amyloidosis results in diffuse involvement of the myocardium. For non-invasive diagnosis of myocardial amyloidosis, delayed post contrast MRI is the current gold standard. However, myocardial involvement can be patchy; not infrequently the delayed enhancement images are technically limited and many patients cannot tolerate contrast due to poor renal function. Hence an alterna...
